In a peer-reviewed journal, the articles are all written by experts–usually professors or scholars in the field–and have been evaluated by an editorial board of scholars. In other words, the articles are written for scholars, by scholars, and judged by “jury” of the author’s “peers.” Such articles may also be called “scholarly,” “refereed” or “academic.” Here’s a chart with more criteria for determining whether an article is peer-reviewed. If you have nagging questions about whether it’s okay to use an article for a particular assignment, ask your professor.
