In a peer-reviewed journal, the articles are all written by experts–usually professors or scholars in the field–and have been evaluated by an editorial board of scholars. In other words, the articles are written for scholars, by scholars, and judged by “jury” of the author’s “peers.” Such articles may also be called “scholarly,” “refereed” or “academic.” Here’s a chart with more criteria for determining whether an article is peer-reviewed. If you have nagging questions about whether it’s okay to use an article for a particular assignment, ask your professor.

Evaluating articles that you have located in a database can be difficult to evaluate. Online articles do not always provide you with the same physical characteristics (advertisements, graphs, illustrations) that you would use to evaluate print articles.

Databases that search a variety of publications – such as magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers – will often provide you with a tab, link, or a check box that allows you to limit your search results strictly to peer-reviewed/scholarly journal articles. Simply use these handy database features to limit your search results to the appropriate publications

Many databases will allow you to email articles directly from the databases to your personal email addresses.  If you choose to use this handy feature, be sure to check your email account to verify that these database emails have arrived in your email inboxes.  Network issues, web traffic, and spam filters will occassionally disrupt the delivery of database emails.  So be sure you have received your database emails before exiting a database.

Most of the UMW Libraries’ databases and electronic journals are licensed for use by the current students, faculty, and staff of the University of Mary Washington. To comply with the requirements mandated by these database vendors, UMW must identify each user by requiring users to login to the UMW system via a proxy server.

When you click on the name of a database or another restricted library resource, you will be required to enter your Novell username and password.  This is the same username and password used to login to UMW email and Blackboard.

For a more detailed explanation on how to access the UMW Libraries’ databases from off-campus, please see our “Using Databases from Off-campus” website.
